The dialtune Snare
How do you describe a drum that goes beyond the limits of all previous experiences? Transcendent!
Quality: This drum reeked of quality from the moment of unboxing. The revolutionary dialtune hardware is awe-inspiring, and every component has a "no corners cut" look and feel. (The understated dialtune etching on the hoops is a classy touch!)
Function: Smooth...As...Silk. The independent tuning dials are smooth and efficient. Even tension can be applied to the bottom and/or top heads in seconds, and it has turned out to be a great teaching tool to quickly show students the effects of different bottom/top head tuning configurations!
Sound: None of the aforementioned features matter if the drum doesn't sound good - but there is no compromise here. This drum "speaks" in that "2nd coming of Christ" way that you want every drum to sound like in the studio (even before you mic up). I don't want you to get the impression that this drum tunes itself - you still have to turn dials and adjust the strainer - but this will take seconds. I won't throw any high end snares under the bus here, but this drum sounds better than some other boutique snares, in a fraction of the time.
I can't wait until dialtune uses this technology on the full kit. It won't be a question of whether or not to buy more dialtune drums - just how many!
My dialtune's maiden voyage (serial #32) was on “Fat” Tuesday, Feb. 25 in Bakersfield, CA. I later employed it at a jazz gig and a recording session. I ran the gamut of styles from reggae to Latin to funk to contemporary Christian music. My fellow musicians and engineers were in awe of it, mostly with the same shocked comment: “how has nobody thought of this before?!”
Being able to tune to specific song keys was as simple as the turn of a knob. It's a bit of an odd sensation hearing such a pure tone coming from the drum. The evenly-tuned drum heads eliminate any unintended overtones from having various tuning lugs. I equate it to being out in the woods where your ears have to compensate for the silence.
I feel there are so many options to maneuver through -- in heads alone!-- that I’m just barely scratching the surface. Any drum that can go from Stan Lynch to Stewart Copeland in seconds is extraordinary. I even incorporated the drum's quick tuning aspect in my solos.
A word of advice to any of you wanting to join this club: do it. This drum is an investment that pays for itself. Once played, it makes you wonder how you lived so long without it. It's the epitome of versatility and quality; a superb, superior snare drum. Invest in a hard case for it.
Bryan and the rest of the dialtune family are considerate, supportive and receptive, treating their buyers with vigilance, courtesy and care. Buy with confidence; they're sincerely here for us.
I stumbled upon the Dial Tune drum at this years NAMM and thought it was a very interesting concept. I met all the guys who were so nice and from there they showed off their awesome drum.
Seeing how this drum could be applied in so many various situations, I knew I had to get one!
After now having the drum for a few months, it’s in my top 3 to use in sessions because of how versatile it can be!
Thanks for making such a great and unique drum!
I was at the Nama show I heard a really great soundings Drum. I went and checked it out it was Dial Tune. I didn’t know nothing about the company but the cats at the booth were very cool. I played the drum and it inspired me to play then I realized all the different genres of music you can play on it and how easy it is to tune and switch your head as a pro player. These things are very valuable but to me being a jazz player I just want to express myself on the Drum Which helps me to do that. you got to check it out. Chuck Ferruggia
